So my passport has been extended to October 2003... and I would have graduated from my MBA program by then... Now it may be time to find out how much of a chance I have in getting into a CS grad school.... Currently I am really not sure what to specialize in other than the fact that I have much interest in distributed systems, software engineering methodology, computer graphics and human computer interaction... now that's a bag of totally different topics... So in other words, I'm clueless... -.-; I'm gonna apply to all the grad schools that I would like to attend by the end of this year to see which ones I can get into. These are some of the schools (not that I have the slightest chance of getting into any one of them) I'm looking in to in no particular order:

I would obviously have to find out if those school offer PhD programs in the area of Computer Science that I'd like to pursue my degree in.... That also means I better get started on studying for the GRE given how bad my undergrad GPA is... -.-; Alright, I'm going to have to start studying for the GRE over the summer if I want to do this... Wish me lots and lots of luck!! ^^

Hmm... Did Verizon increase the upload bandwidth available for residential ADSL? I'm getting around 150Kbps throughput.... It was usually around 90Kbps... this is kinda odd... in a good way.. :) Well, so it looks like I actually have around 128Kbps of bandwidth available according to this page on Verizon.NET... At any rate, this is odd... higher throughput than available bandwidth.... oh well...

Ever wondered what came after foo and bar? Why don't you consult the New Hacker's Dictionary? :)

Splurge of the month... So I just ordered a 60GB Maxtor 7200RPM ATA/100 HDD... It was like $100... I can't believe I was running on 9GB for my main machine until now... I mean.. my secondary machine has 27GB of space, but my main machine had a measley 9GB... So, I went out on a limb to get myself a new 60 gigger... :) Hopefully over the summer I'll also have enough money to splurge some more to finish building my proxy box and beef up the rest of my boxes...

Here's what I'm hoping to set up by the end of summer.

  • Router Box
    • Serves BabyScratch.COM on Apache w/ PHP4 & Python
    • IP Masquerading and Port Mapping to route packets to the other 2 machines
  • Workstation
    • Windows 2000 for my dev needs, music needs, internet needs, etc...
  • Window Server / Database Server
    • Windows 2000 running MySQL, IIS 5.0 w/ ASP serves up Beijingers.ORG

Ok, so finally I have checked off a lot of stuff from my to-do list and got around to troubleshooting my then defunct secondary computer. The problem was the power supply... Kids, never buy el-cheapo 300Watt power supplies... they just die on you like those 50 cent chicks (those that come out of chicken eggs) you buy on the streets of Korea.. Ok, now I can burn CDs at home... pu heh heh heh... Took me long enuf...

I should have posted this up sooner, but Universal Library has such an abundunt pool of resources for you knowledge junkies, that you'll have to spend days to dig through all of them. It also has the video footage of the Fred Brooks lecture I talked about previously. Check it out! I'm eagerly awaiting the video of the lecture on distributed data source replication to get posted.

NTT Docomo to bring i-mode to the U.S. ? This could be pretty cool if it really works out...

I think it was a great idea to take the Agile Programming Methods course @ CMU this semester... I've learned quite a bit about the subject, and I've made a habit of practicing the two main ideas of eXtreme programming that I value the most: test-first programming and on-demand merciless refactoring. There are many articles these days dealing with the subject of agile programming methods on software development magazines, and the common theme is how people turn to patterns and over-engineer once they get a few years of experience under their belts. I feel exactly the same. I find it rather refreshing to turn away from being over-flexible and to strike a balance between well thougt out flexibility and the simplest "undesigned" approach. I've never felt more confident about software engineering!!! :)
