I don't think I have shown enuf enthusiasm on the soon-to-debut product dubbed "Final Scratch".. ^^ I just hope so long as I'm ripping MP3s from my own CDs I'm legit. So many discussions around the debut of Final Scratch revolve around illegal MP3s. I have no problem BUYING a track of MP3 so long as it's priced at most a $1 per track (hopefully cheaper? heh heh). But until I can actually purchase all the tunes I want in MP3 format online I'm going to have to keep ripping from my CDs and vinyls.

But with all the MP3 related issues aside, I can't keep smiling when I think of how much more fun it would be to DJ with Final Scratch. I'll instantly have a DOUBLE of ANY track I want, so I can juggle the shit out of any track that I want. I don't have to haul around my CD players (No, I'm not dissing CD decks, mine doesn't allow me to manipulate it freely like the latest and greatest CD decks, so it's not as fun. That's all.). It's just a perfect solution for me. Now I just have to hope that it performs as advertised. :) When I get Final Scratch I'm thinking of selling my two CD decks and my DJM mixer to get an EFX 500 and a Rane TTM 56, cuz I really don't need my DJM 600 anymore... I can get all the effects it has from EFX 500 and I really just need 2 channels.. Other dubious features are just in my way most of the time. I'll probably also sell my Stanton SK2F and Tascam Porta Studio to get a Mackie CFX 12 for my home studio setup. Man... It's a major overhaul, ain't it? :) I suppose the only thing I'll miss from DJM 600 is the XLR output it has... If I'm in a performance situation which requires XLR output, then I could just haul over the Mackie Mixer... What do you guys think?

Damn... That was the most difficult crowd I've ever had in my entire dj career.... There were a bunch of old skool hip hop headz in the crowd feeling some of the more obscure old skool stuff I was putting down and there were the usual CMU mainstream crowd, but it didn't end there, there were a bunch of trance and reggae crowd... Throughout the night people were requesting trance and reggae.... Boy, I just started thinking that I was at the wrong party... -.-; Since the party wasn't that big it seemed like it was almost impossible to keep a good chunk of the people happy at any given moment in time... It made matters worse when I realized how big the place was and where I was going to be DJing at. My eye level was the same as the crowd's which makes it impossible for me to see the entire crowd's reaction... grrr...

Well, the good news is that I got to try out the sony mdr-dj700 headphones... and man... they're soooo comfortable! I felt that the bass reception on it wasn't as good as the Pioneer SE-DJ5000... but for my ears, these headphones were much more comfortable... I'm gonna have to save up to get a pair for myself... Oh, and the Ear Plug I recently bought online has done wonders tonight... It totally blocks the high frequencies but at the same time it lets the rest pass through. Greatly recommended!!! :)

Alright, so today we finished off our DJ stand project. I drilled holes on the steel strip that would be placed under the mixer and also drilled holes in the base as well. Then Jeff ground and ground the holes. I also felt that the stand was a bit tall, so I sawed off a couple inches off the bottom and filed it nice and smooth. Then we spray painted the base black and left it to dry. Also look at the beautiful final product having fun amongst orange balls.

The stand does wobble a bit if handled violently, but not too much. Given that most of the "violent" actions will take place on my turntables placed on the table this is perfectly acceptable. I can't wait till I get my FinalScratch setup and get to put my laptop on this stand!!!

I think the easiest way to offend a DJ is to tell him/her what tracks to play. Man, half the fun rocking a party is choosing my own tracks and going with the flow of the night trying this, trying that, moving the crowd. If you come at me and say shit like "Play that new Booty Crap by J-Lo", then you have been silently thrown into my "I ain't listening to you no more" bucket. For mainstream Top 40 DJs, I guess they're used to matching the crowd's taste, but for underground DJs, the crowd follows the DJ around... they travel to arenas where the DJ spins. I'm not interested in playing Top 40 stuff... Hell, I might throw some in if I feel like it, but I have my own style of mixing and track selection. That's what makes the DJ that I am. If you don't like it, then that's just too bad.

So, in an effort to maximize the efficient use of the given real estate for my DJ set up, I have decided to build a stand for my two CD players. Actually, it's really more of a stand for my final skratch set up in the future, but it serves both purposes perfectly well. :) Since buying a stand made for that very purpose would cost me like $300, I thought I'd buy the bear minimum parts necessary and build it on my own. Well, not really on my own, with much help from my colleagues who know stuff about industrial design ^^.

So I bought a QuickLok Z730, which will hold either my two CD 700s or my laptop computer, for $70. Given what the Z730 does for the price we thought it would be ridiculous to try and build that ourselves since that would just be too costly and time-consuming. I also bought two 1.5"x1/8 plain steel flat stock for $10. Jeff says that's all we need since we have other minor parts like nuts & bolts already lying around at our shop. We got ready, then cut the metal, bent it then bolted it on to the base of the stand so that there will be just enough room for the mixer to fit inside the bent metal. As you can see in the picture to the right, it is not fully done. We have to paint it, sand it, then attach two strips of metal (You see one in the picture, but it's not attached yet) to the base so that I can put my mixer on top of it as a weight. I'll post up the final product when it gets done!!!

I didn't know that WRCT had any decent Hip Hop shows these days... It just seemed as if the moment I graduated the station had turned into a electronica frenzy. Well, guess what? There's the "The next Level Show" airing every Saturday noon. Strrrrream it!!!
